Providing Safe Sleepz to our Redcliffe community.
Sleepbus was a pioneering Australian charity founded in 2016 by Melbourne businessman Simon Rowe, who had once experienced homelessness himself. His vision was simple but powerful: convert buses into safe, temporary overnight shelters for people sleeping rough. Each bus was fitted with up to 14 individual pods, complete with a mattress, bedding, USB charging, lights, a lockable door and even a toilet!
Multiple buses operate across Queensland and New South Wales, and in October 2024, Redcliffe proudly received its own Sleepbus. Sadly, due to financial pressures, Sleepbus wound down operations, and the Redcliffe bus was entrusted to local charity The Breakfast Club Redcliffe, who rebranded it as the Safe Sleepz Bus.

Our Creative Director, Kelly Jackson, already a volunteer with The Breakfast Club Redcliffe, jumped aboard for the very first Safe Sleepz shift on Friday, 4th October 2024, and has been a regular volunteer ever since.
Today, around 30 volunteers support the service each weekend, helping run operations every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. But we’re looking to grow. More volunteers are needed to expand to seven nights a week to ensure the service remains consistent and safe.
- Bus Drivers: Require a medium rigid truck licence to move the bus to and from its location each night.
- Driver’s Drivers: Shuttle drivers to and from their vehicles.
- Service Volunteers: Welcome guests and assist them in settling in for the night.
- Caretakers: Stay overnight to monitor safety and guest well-being.
- Housekeeping Volunteers: Clean and reset the bus before the next service.

Safe Sleepz isn’t just a bed for the night; it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and what’s possible when empathy meets ingenuity.
